If you are looking for medications known as muscle relaxants and antispastics, Baclofen is one of the most safe and widely prescribed drugs.

Baclofen is an antispastic agent, a muscle relaxant which influences the nerves of the spinal cord and reduces the number of muscle spasms, tightness and cramping that may be the result of different spinal diseases or multiple sclerosis. Because baclofen is primarily removed from the body by the kidneys, people with reduced kidney function shoul be monitored by their doctor while taking baclofen.

How Baclofen should be taken

Baclofen is used to treat spasticity (uncontrolled muscle movements) caused by multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or spinal cord diseases. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription) and herbal medications that you are taking. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or illegal drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

How does Baclofen work?

Baclofen is available in tablets taken orally usually 3 times a day at approximately the same time. The medicine is taken with either food or a glass of water. Baclofen tends to cause giddiness, make sure you know how your body reacts to the medicine. People with certain types of bladder problems, history of seizures, psychiatric disorders, stomach ulcers, or liver problems should use baclofen with caution.

A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. If any of the following side effects develop, consult with your doctor: stomach upset, weakness, giddiness, heartbeat irregularities, dark urine, skin rash, sleepiness, confusion.
